Planning for the trip began almost a year ago, certainly not anticipating we would be there during a major event in Cuban history. My wife and I went to Cuba for 12 days in early December and arrived two days before Castro’s funeral. The photograph was taken as thousands lined the streets of Santiago to watch the funeral procession come into town, the afternoon before the funeral. We were traveling with 14 other photographers from the US and Switzerland. The Cuban people were very warm, friendly, and happy, even though many were poor by our standards. We were invited into their homes to enjoy freshly baked cookies, coffee, or their prized home-made sherry. In the near future I will post a more complete story with photographs on my photography website at Also, check out my photographs on Instagram @danbiggerstaff.
