Endometrial ablation destroys the lining of the uterus using various techniques. The method I prefer is called Novasure Ablation, which uses high-frequency sound waves to destroy the lining of the uterus. This photo shows the device:
In my opinion, this technique offers the highest safety and the best results. At least 90% of patients treated with the Novasure have significant reduction or complete elimination of menstrual bleeding.
Endometrial ablation removes the tissue that causes menstrual periods. The Novasure ablation cannot be used in patients with a very large uterus. The surgery is performed as an outpatient in the operating room with the patient asleep. Some physicians perform ablation in their office, but I have chosen not to do the ablation in my office because of the amount of pain associated with the surgery.
is usually done at the same time as the ablation to rule out any significant abnormalities in the uterus such as cancer. Most patients return to work the next day after the procedure.
