Abnormal Bleeding Surgery

Treatment of abnormal bleeding depends on the cause of the bleeding. The bleeding may be treated with medication without surgery or may require surgery. The types of surgery include:

  • removal of benign (non-cancerous) growths including polyps and fibroids usually with hysteroscopy D&C – D&C is also used to treat miscarriage
  • laparoscopy may be used to treat an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy
  • endometrial ablation or destruction of the lining of the uterus with various techniques
  • hysterectomy is sometimes needed if other surgeries do not stop the bleeding
